Huntsville Alabama L5 (HAL5) is the Huntsville Alabama chapter of the National Space Society (NSS). It was formed in 1983 and incorporated in 1984. Both HAL5 and the NSS are not-for-profit 501(c)(3), grassroots, space educational / advocacy organizations. Members share the enthusiasm that space development can stimulate our world with immeasurable benefits in the areas of education, energy, environment, industry, resources, and ultimately room to grow for our society. HAL5 and NSS believe that by educating and working with the public, the government, and private industry, we can speed up the date when routine, safe, and affordable space travel is available to anyone who wants to go.

[edit] North Alabama Freethought Association (NAFA)
NAFA is a group of Freethinkers that get together for like-minded conversation, friendship, and activism. NAFA members enjoy monthly dinners (currently held at West End Grill on Old Madison Pike on the third Friday of each month), weekly coffee socials, movie nights, camping trips, and much more. NAFA is a very active group with diverse events to appeal to all aspects of the Freethinking community. NAFA is an official affiliate of American Atheists.
NAFA members, under the umbrella term of "Freethinker," include (in alphabetical order) Agnostics, Atheists, Brights, Constitutionalists, Darwinists, Humanists, Naturalists, Non-Theists, Secularists, Separationists, Skeptics, and more. NAFA members are a diverse crowd, which leads to lively discussions and exchanges of information at any NAFA event.

The North Alabama Irish Association was founded by local Irish musicians and dancers to promote Irish culture through music,dance and language. Bands such as SlipJig,Kinvara and Maple Hill regularly perform throughout the community and are often joined by the Huntsville Irish Dancers. Lessons in the traditional Irish arts are available as well.For more information visit http://www.northalabamairish.org
[edit] North Alabama Science Fiction Association (NASFA)
The North Alabama Science Fiction Association (NASFA) is a general-interest Science Fiction club headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama. NASFA meets on the third Saturday* of each month at BookMark on South Memorial Parkway. Meeting time is from 6pm to 8pm. The business portion of the meeting ("New Business?" "Old Business?") is at 6pm. The program is at 7pm. The meeting program changes each month and can be anything from "Monster Makeover" to a discussion with a local author or scientist. There is usually an after-the-meeting meeting with directions available at the program. Meetings are open to the public. You do not have to be a dues-paying member to attend the Saturday meetings. All you need is an interest in Science-fiction, Fantasy, or related genres. A sense of humor, while not required, is recommended.
NASFA puts on a general-interest Science Fiction and Fantasy convention once a year known as Con*Stellation. For more info on the convention go here.
*Unless there is a large nearby convention being held that weekend -- in which case we often move the meeting to the second or fourth weekend.
[edit] Von Braun Astronomical Society (VBAS)
VBAS is a society for astronomy lovers of all ages. They operate at the VBAS Planetarium on Monte Sano, and have regular Member's meetings open to the public. They also typically have one children's show a month and one other show.
They are located near Monte Sano State Park, and visitors to the planetarium do not have to pay the "Donation Box" fee. Directions and show information can be found at www.vbas.org
